Inclusive Sports at the 2018 Arnold Sports Festival

20 March, 2018

For the second year in a row, Spire was excited to be invited back to take part in the 2018 Arnold Sports Festival. Held over three days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre we had the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate Inclusive Sports to the world’s largest multi-sport and fitness festival. Established by Arnold Schwarzenegger the festival features live sports demonstrations, health and fitness workshops and celebrity athletes.

We proudly partnered with Special Olympics Victoria (SOA), YMCA and Disability Sport & Recreation (DSR) to successful provide three days of action-packed inclusive sports; including blindfold boxing, basketball and cricket drills with SOA, wheelchair rugby, AFL, badminton and heaps more! We were pleased our area received some extra attention when Arny himself had a few hits of wheelchair tennis with Dylan Alcott!

DSR also provided extra sport wheelchairs so participants could ‘come and try’ the different sports; learning some skills from the experts and seeing what it’s like to participate in a sport from a different perspective. This year we connected more organisations, making it a huge success for our community – exposing the wider public to the skills, abilities and capacity of inclusive sports athletes and raising awareness to the range of sports and activities available.

Other highlights of the event were the strongman competitions, speed cubing, boxing and pole fitness. Thank you to all the organisations and people that helped us create a great three-day event and to all the athletes and participants that gave up their time to attend - helping make it the success that it was!
